Keynote Speaker
Weaving a Tradition, Ho Chunk Black Ash Basket Making
Kimberly Crowley, Thunder Clan of the Ho-Chunk Nation talks about the art of basket making. Will talk about how and why she got started and how basketmaking has dwindled down to only a few people that know how to make baskets out of black ash. How the Emerald Ash Bore had killed off many ash trees across the state and how it is affecting basket making.
Speaker Bio
Kimberly N. Crowley, thunder clan member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, grew up in Wittenberg, WI with parents, Sidney R. Hall, Sr. and Christine Hall and 10 brothers and sisters. She’s been learning and making baskets for over 40+ years. Teaching the art of Black Ash basket making keeps Kimberly close to my parents and relatives who were basket makers as well. Basket making is now about her as an individual, it’s about her family and how they work together to produce beautiful baskets. Kimberly’s two remaining brothers help her harvest the Black Ash tree and pound the log to get the strips. Her children all know how to make baskets, and now her two granddaughters are learning and making baskets right alongside her.
In 2025 Discover Wisconsin premiered a video with Kimberly and her family about the art of Black Ash Basket making: Weaving a Tradition, black ash basket making. Check it out via YouTube.
Breakout Session Overviews
How Did I Get Here?
Presented by Cassie Hartje, BTC Executive Director of Advancement & Foundation
Each of us is on a different path, and often you might ask yourself, “How Did I Get Here?” Much like the game of LIFE, there are planned stops and unexpected ones. As you pop your person peg in the little LIFE car, Cassie will take you through how to make the most of each stop on the journey.
Tackling Time Management
Presented by Rosy Flores, BTC Student Success Specialist
I work with students to provide support, resources, and guidance throughout their educational journey. One of the keys to success is good time management. Planning ahead and breaking larger tasks into smaller steps can make achieving your goals feel much more manageable.
How Our Experiences, Mentorship, and Passion Shape the Next Generation
Presented by Chef Hakim J. Salaam, BTC Program Lead – Culinary Arts & Hospitality
A successful culinary career is measured by more than the meals we prepare, the kitchens we manage, or the positions we hold. Our greatest professional legacy may be the people we influence along the way. This session explores a central question: What mark are we leaving? Participants may examine how professional experiences, mistakes, successes, relationships, and industry knowledge can be transformed into meaningful educational experiences that prepare students not only to work, but to succeed and lead too.
